Logo Competition: And the winner is…

Andrea Tamboroni’s logo was the clear winner with almost 50% of the vote. In his original submission, Andrea said he “worked around the idea of people (mouse cursors) getting together to discuss in order to make the web better (idea of a sun shining).” I think that is a pretty fair description of what we do at London Web Standards.

Andrea Tamborini has 8 years of design experience with corporate and institutional clients, with a focus on communicating complex messages across a range of media. Andrea’s expertise lies in developing strong design concepts both offline and online, including branding, advertising, digital and print design.

Recently he co-founded Caustic Media, an integrated agency which offers a range of tailored solutions from corporate identity, webdesign, front and back-end development as well as mobile applications.

We’re pleased to present the London Web Standards Logo Competition entries.

You can click on each option to see the image in a larger format. We’ve made a few changes to allow you to see all the submitted logos in one image. If you would like to see the logos are they were originally submitted, links are provided beneath the poll. Logos are presented in the order they were submitted.

Voting will close at midnight on Sunday, July 19th. The winner will be announced the following Monday.

LWS July: JavaScript Best Practices

London Web Standards July is nearly upon us. We’ll be meeting on the 13th of July at the Square Pig in Holborn (see the previous post).

This month Ben Dodson will be discussing JavaScript Best Practices.

His presentation will cover:

A look at JavaScript (and the web in general) in 1997 and why it sucked
The reinvention of JavaScript thanks to maps and libraries
Why semantic HTML makes for lightweight JavaScript
JavaScript best practice (e.g. why scripts should be external before the rather than verbose in the )
A quick tour of the JavaScript libraries
jQuery: it’s light, it’s sexy, it’s the JavaScript library that Apple would sell
Extending jQuery with plugins
A few quick demonstrations of how to improve a website correctly with jQuery
Questions (with possible Answers)

New venue: The Square Pig

After an exhaustive search of central London pubs with function room and many, many beers, we’ve finally found a new venue.

The new venue is The Square Pig in Holborn. We’ll be meeting there for the next meetup on the 13th of July, where Ben Dodson will be giving a presentation on JavaScript Best Practices.

For those of you who haven’t been following the mailing list. The criteria for the new venue:

A function room for between 25 and 50 people
Wifi
Free access to the function room and a minimum spend of no more than £200
Preferably with a screen and projector (or a television that we can use as both)
Preferably real ale
Preferably decent food

The Square Pig admirably fits all of these criteria. In addition, there is a private bar in the function room.

I’ll see you all on the 13th. I’m looking forward to seeing what everyone thinks of the new venue.

Logo Competition

You may have noticed that we’ve replaced the London Web Standards logo on the Meetup page. It’s not a very good logo. I can say that because I designed it, and it took me all of 10 minutes.

Think you can do better? So do I!

Announcing the London Web Standards logo competition.

The rules are pretty simple:

All submissions are due in two weeks. The deadline is midnight (BST) on the 7th of July.
Once you have designed the logo, upload it somewhere online and post the link to the London Web Standards Mailing List.
From the 8th to the 13th of July, there will be an online poll to choose everyone’s favorite logo.
The winner will be announced at the next London Web Standards meetup.

That’s it. I can’t wait to see what everyone comes up with!

W3C Mobile Web: London Study Group

A few London Web Standards members are taking the W3C’s Introduction to Mobile Web Best Practices. Between twitter and the mailing list, we’ve organised a study group.

We’ll be meeting on Mondays, when the new course materials are posted. The course starts tomorrow, and we’ll be having our first study group.

May Meetup: Structuring CSS

Justin Cormack of Squiz UK will be addressing these questions, using Squiz’s Mashable Design, Nicole Sullivan’s Object Oriented CSS and SASS as examples.

London Web Standards Blog

At the last London Web Standards meetup, we discussed setting up a blog to keep a record of content (presentations, etc.) generated by the meetups.

We’ll also be using this blog as a hub for the group — a place for members to connect with one another.

There should be a number of improvements to the blog over the next couple of weeks — domain name, theme, more sidebar elements, etc.

We’ll announce it to the world once it’s ready for prime time.
